Reality: Portugal is cold and rainy.
No one here seems to be able to remember the last time it rained so much in May. Pictured below we find the crew trekking through the mountains in a downpour. Don't mistake the smiles for joy; we are soaked to the bone and delirious with hypothermia. When the scenery emerges from the clouds and fog it is stunning--steep green slopes speckled with yellow and purple wildflowers below craggy peaks. Surprisingly reminiscent of last year's family vacation to Scotland, only this time we weren't expecting Scottish weather.
And here we are in our hotel, sitting about 4 ft. from the fireplace

That's one thing Italian mothers would never do to you. They would do many other, probably equally horrendous things to you, but not forcing you to walk through miserable weather in Portugal. In fact, I don't know of any Italian mothers ever setting foot in that country, except for the late mother of the last king. But that's just because his son was exiled there. She had no choice.
Hard to know which is worse. Coughs go away, but emotional trauma lingers for years...or so I hear :)
mmm. portugal did seem to leave you distinctly underwhelmed. i can see why.
