Trial, error, success

One of the downsides about trial-and-error cooking is the error bit. Tonight I decided to do some lovely squid from the market a la plancha...but it was not to be.
For whatever reason (perhaps the lack of an actual plancha) my squid refused to cooperate, ending up in a sticky mess. And this after I had spent a good while cutting out their guts and popping off their beaks.Fortunately, I found myself in possession of a mostly-drank bottle of white wine. Into the pot it went, along with onions, garlic, capers, lemon rind, and bay leaves.
After stewing to perfection, the squid was tossed into a salad of fennel, tomato, and beets. The result--delicious! Diner was saved. The people rejoiced.

Tom - have you tried cooking on an Evo plancha? It might be a good alternative. www.evoamerica.com

No, I haven't, and it bothers me that your company has created a computer program that seeks out blog postings about planchas and makes crass marketing posts on them. Now I will never buy an evo plancha or any other evo product. You won't commercialize MY blog, bastards.

I struggle with guilt when eating delicious squid & octopus, ever since I saw a tv documentary which demonstrated both their innate intelligence and their wide emotional range.

In recognition of their status as thinking, feeling animals they are the only non-vertebrates for which, in the UK, you need a government licence before undertaking vivisection-type experiments.

Plus, I was totally nauseated by that scene in amazing Korean film Oldboy, in which our hero, on his release from prison, celebrates by eating a live octopus (or was it a squid?), the tentacles frantically curling around his face as the poor beast tried in terror to escape the man's chewing jaws.

Yeah, for guilt-free eating give me a juicy cow any day...

Er... And I too will be boycotting evoamerica.com for their annoying commercialism. That should put a mighty dent in their profits. Oh yes.
